Juana Reyes was arrested last month for selling tamales without a permit in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Now she’s facing deportation back to Mexico, even though she’s been in the country for 20 years and she’s the sole provider for her two US citizen kids.
The old stereotype in the United States goes that undocumented workers 'do not make jobs'. In this instance, however, this lady single mother is trying to do the right thing. She's working hard at the job she made herself--selling home-made tamales.
This is just another instance of 'low-hanging fruit' in which the local police departments try to fulfill their quotas, (yes they exist, even if they are not on the books) by taking out the handcuffs on individuals who commit slight, slight offensives.
Why are we punishing job creators?
Heres what I have to say to Governor Brown: Sign the Trust Act.
Link to Trust Act
We need to make an America we can be proud of. We should not be taking our frustrations out on the "Tamale Lady". We need policies like the Trust Act that enable us to build a better future for Reyes' kids. And, as a guy in the nearby generation, I don't want to live in a future based on fear.
Read Aurora's blog which goes into greater detail.
